Tour around Horta de Lleida
Horta de Lleida is a rural area with a high natural, cultural and productive value. It has been strongly linked to the city of Lleida since its foundation.
Lleida is located in a semiarid area with an annual rainfall of 300 to 400 mm. A vast irrigation network has allowed for the development of high-intensity agriculture, resulting in a rich, green landscape that contrasts with the near dry land areas.
Horta de Lleida is divided into approximately 60 small areas which were originally separated by irrigation systems or crops.
Horta is provided with water through 3 main canals: Aragon and Catalonia Canal (in Raïmat and Sucs), which provides water for big productive fields, Urgell Canal and Pinyana Canal, which provides water for smaller fields and Fontanet i Torres Canal, which takes water from up the Segre and channels it down to Horta for irrigation.
Besides the very deep transformations that it has experienced over times, Horta de Lleida preserves its identity and its productivity. Nonetheless, it also faces threats and challenges. There is a certain risk of fracture and separation from urban society. That is why today it is essential to develop a sound promotion strategy that highlights its productive, leisure, environmental and social potential and allows the Horta to recover its territorial identity. .
